Love & Justice: A Journey of Empowerment, Activism and Embracing Black Beauty is the new book by artist Laetitia Ky who creates stunning and powerful sculptures using Afro hair
Love & Justice: A Journey of Empowerment, Activism and Embracing Black Beauty by Laetitia Ky (Princeton Architectural Press, £19.99) is the story of influencer and activist and fashion designer Laetitia Ky. Well-known for her elaborate and sculpted hair art with socially conscious messages, Laetitia uses extensions, wire and glue to create her towering or all-encompassing statements. Through her Instagram account, (she has over half a million followers) she has garnered international acclaim – no one is doing what she does – and a social media contract with Elite Models under her partnership with TikTok.
Part autobiography and photographic journal, we discover her path from her childhood in the Ivory Coast to her journey towards self-love.
Powerful and committed, Love & Justice addresses issues such as women’s bodies, misogyny, racial oppression, and toxic beauty standards, all seen through the lens of this young African woman who is still only 25.
Close to her African roots, the book is also a celebration of her Ivorian heritage. 135 photographs illustrate the book, revealing her strong family ties, her culture and her desire to empower other women and especially black women.
This feminist and inspiring manifesto is a true invitation to resilience.
