Tired of not finding salons near her, Shani Austin-Williams has launched Nyuri, a new black hair directory that helps you find African, Caribbean and mixed-race hair and beauty services all over the UK
Nyuri is a free, easy to use search directory where you can find African, Caribbean and mixed-race hair and beauty services all over the UK. The website has approximately 400 listings from Aberdeen to Plymouth, featuring: hairdressers, barbers, make-up artists and more.
Founder Shani Austin-Williams says, ‘Having always assumed that I would never be able to get my hair done in areas outside of London, it became the norm to wait until I was back in London in order to get my hair maintained. The idea for the website came when faced with a dilemma of being outside of London and desperately needing to get my hair dyed.’
The name Nyuri is a play on a Swahili word “Uzuri” meaning beauty.
The website Nyuri.co.uk creates one central hub where all the hair and beauty services can be found and to give businesses – especially freelancers, a platform to promote their talent. ‘The website is unlike other directories as it is completely free for businesses to register, present their portfolio, receive reviews and link to their website or social media profiles,’ explains Shani.
The search can be narrowed down using the services required, postcode and radius functions. You can even find European hairdressers/salons who are trained in curly or coily hair also being listed in the directory. Shani comments, ‘My hope for the website is that it can be accessed by those who need it, those in the more remote or less urbanised areas or people new to a city and don’t know where to access the services they want.’
