How do I test my hair porosity?
The test is very easy and takes less than 5 minutes. You will need a glass of water and 2 strands of clean hair. Drop the hair in the glass of water and leave for 3/4 minutes. If your strands of hair float at the top of the glass, this means your hair is of low porosity. If you hair sinks midway, this means your hair is of medium porosity. If your hair sinks to the bottom, you have high porosity hair.
Low, medium and high – what does it all mean?
Low porosity is more common amongst curly haired women. The closed cuticles of the hair mean that moisture finds it very difficult to penetrate the hair and stay there. Your hair needs particular manipulation to absorb it. Low porosity hair is more susceptible to product build up.
High porosity hair is like a sponge and will absorb whatever moisture comes its way. As appealing as this may seem, as quickly as it absorbs the moisture, it loses it equally as quick – resulting in brittle hair that is prone to breakage.
Medium porosity hair is every woman’s dream. The hair absorbs moisture at a satisfactory rate and holds it well enough for you not to worry too much about re-applying products or having to ingredient watch.
Do you have low porosity hair?
Low porosity hair benefits greatly from one thing – hair steaming. This is the fail proof way of sneaking moisture into your hair. The steam opens up the hair follicles and pores on the scalp allowing moisture in. Following up with a deep conditioner and covering with a plastic bag is the key to enabling the moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. Water based products such as Creme of Nature Butter-licious Curls Curl Hydrating Creme (£5.49) and light oils such as coconut oil are ideal for low porosity hair.
Do you have high porosity hair?
High porosity hair benefits from co-washing as some shampoos can be too harsh. Deep conditioning should be done for a smaller amount of time compared to low porosity hair and should be rinsed with cooler water. Sealants and heavier oils will prevent moisture leaving the hair so rapidly. Argan oil is a great oil for high porosity hair. Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Seal It Up Hydrating Sealing Butter (£3.99) is a the perfect sealant for high porosity hair.
Can my hair porosity change over time?
Yes. The introduction of chemicals can alter your hair porosity. Also, if your hair is currently damaged and the damage hair grows out, the healthy hair could be of a different porosity to the previously damaged hair. Be sure to listen to your hair and switch up your regime if necessary. You can even check your porosity yearly.
