Kicking keratosis pilaris to the kerb

The annoying skin condition and how to stay on top of it

What is keratosis pilaris?
Commonly referred to as ‘chicken skin’, keratosis pilaris is a build up of keratin in the skin follicles. The inherited and common skin condition affects 50-80% of adolescents and up to 40% of adults.

How is it diagnosed?
It presents itself as tiny bumps, usually on the arms, thighs and buttocks. Though harmless, it can be extremely annoying for sufferers who spend a lot of their time looking for remedies or ways in which they can hide it.

What does it look like?
On black skin keratosis can be quite unsightly; resembling thousands of tiny blackheads. It can also be accompanied with dry skin.

Can it be cured or managed?
Sadly there are no cures for it but the condition can be managed with various techniques & specific products. The first step is investing in a high quality body scrub. We recommend Goldfaden MD Doctor’s Scrub, £65. Though pricey, this body scrub is a must-have as recommended by our Digital Ed Vanessa who has suffered with keratosis pilaris since puberty. Marketed as a face scrub, this pot of ruby crystals is abrasive enough to gently polish away stubborn protruding bumps, leaving your skin feeling remarkably softer to touch. Follow up with a deeply moisturising body lotion such as The Body Shop Shea Body Butter, £15. This body butter literally sins straight into the skin providing you with consistently hydrated skin until its next application.
