As well as missing our friends and family during quarantine, there’s one other special person that you may be counting down the days to see: your hairdresser. Whether you’re fretting about your roots or regrowth, fear not. Natalie Joseph, director stylist at leading hairdressing group Hype Coiffure Battersea, is here with her top quarantine tips, to help you maintain your coloured, relaxed, natural hair or weave during lockdown.

Caring for coloured hair

We feel you. After not stepping foot in a salon for months, your roots are likely to be glaring at you every time you pass a mirror and the temptation to take your hair into your own hands is strong. As a hairstylist and educator I do not promote the use of at-home hair colour kits because the results aren’t even. I know some may think that colouring your hair is simply mixing the contents in the box and slapping it onto your hair, but it’s not that simple. Get it wrong and you might even cause long-term damage, which could prove more stressful and costly to rectify in the long-term.

To maintain your shade, there are a host of products that you can use including spray on colours, coloured wax, colour mousse, hair lipsticks or hair mascaras.

Coloured hair

As hard as it may seem, I’d strongly recommend waiting for salons to reopen, so that your fully qualified stylist or colour technician can give you a thorough consultation and diagnosis, designed specifically for your hair. As trained specialists, they will know how to prevent damage and personalise your colour to achieve the best results, safely.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for a safer way to maintain your shade, there are a host of products that you can use including spray on colours, coloured wax, colour mousse, hair lipsticks or hair mascaras. These all offer a temporary solution for covering your grey hairs as well, without causing long-term damage to your locks.

Managing relaxed hair and the regrowth

If you’re thinking about reaching for the at-home relaxing kit to chemically straighten your hair at home, my advice is to please think again. Off-the-shelf brands are generic and do not contain the same ingredients or formulas as the professional brands used by your trained salon technician.

As tempting as it is to just give it a go, wait for your stylist. They will use a relaxer system that is tailored to suit your hair to help you achieve the desired texture.

Invest in deep-conditioning moisture treatments that hydrate your hair. By helping to make your hair softer, you’ll find it’s more manageable.

Relaxers

Trust me. I completely understand the challenges of dealing with two different textures: your regrowth roots vs. the relaxed ends, but there is another way to keep your hair under control, safely.

Start by investing in deep-conditioning moisture treatments that hydrate your hair. By helping to make your hair softer, you’ll find it’s more manageable.

If you’re finding it difficult to get a comb through your roots, try applying some good quality heat protection, a leave-in conditioner and serum to lock in the moisture, then blow-dry your hair to smooth out the regrowth.
