Healthy Summer Hair: Expert Tips for Nurturing Natural Locks

Natural hair basics in the sun

Firstly, it’s important to understand that your hair, like your skin, is susceptible to damage from the sun’s rays. To avoid the sun wreaking havoc on your hair wear a cap, light scarf or sun hat – the latter of course is also a great style accessory! You could also try a protective style such as faux locs, crochet braids or twisted updos that keep your hair tucked away. Another important tip is to stay hydrated. A healthy body equals healthy hair. Keep your hair and scalp hydrated with water-based leave-in conditioners like our all time favourite the Honey-Rain Juice (£11.99). These simple steps will ensure your hair stays easy to manage. During the hot summer months, I’d also advise you to wash your hair at least once a week. Product build-up and sweat are a big no-no, so make sure you keep your hair and scalp squeaky clean with our Stimulate and Cleanse Shampoo (£13.99).

Dealing with heat damage

So your hair has taken a beating from the sun, what now? The first step is to establish how much of your hair is damaged. Once you have established this, incorporate a protein treatment. Work a product into your hair regime to help prevent further damage, along with deep conditioning on wash days. Trim any ends that are beyond repair; I know it’s painful, but it will be worth it in the long run! Be patient, the process of repairing your hair may seem long, but you will get there with consistency and these steps – that’s a promise!

Tips for children

A fun protective style is much more convenient for holidays. The last thing you want to be doing is spending ages detangling knots after a beach or pool session. Banding, twists or braids are a few great options! If they’re in and out the water, an additional trick to protect their hair is with olive oil and a conditioner. Apply a liberal amount of extra virgin olive oil to the strands, followed by a conditioner like our Cooler2Cowash (10.99). This will add an extra barrier of protection against chlorine or seawater.
