In a recent Instagram post, singer Rochelle Humes shared her fresh natural curls, but it wasn’t just because she was feeling a hair switch up for the festive season – Rochelle explained that her 4-year-old daughter kept telling her she didn’t like her naturally curly hair because she didn’t ‘look like a princess’ with ‘long straight hair’.
We couldn’t agree more, which is why we spoke to Paks, brand ambassador natural curly enthusiast digital influencer Simone Powderly from Hair is Simba for some great advice on caring for your curls with Paks and Mazuri Shea Butter Naturals range.
Simone says ’I think it’s great! It was one of the reasons why I started to embrace my natural hair as I know growing up I wanted to look like my Mum and she was Caucasian with blonde straight hair. So for me, when I have my daughter I want her to be able to be identify with me and know her mum embraces her natural hair! It’s very important for young girls. A mother is their first role model.’
What are the essential products all curly girls must have?
‘The essential products for curls are your conditioner and leave-in conditioner. It’s so important for curls to be hydrated and moisturised. I regularly use the Mazuri Shea Butter Naturals Co-Wash Conditioner which really seals in moisture and is so easy to comb through.’

How often should I wash my curls?
‘Wash your curls with shampoo at least once a week and co-wash every 3 days.’
Should I co-wash my curls?
‘Yes, but you must shampoo at least once a week. Co-washing is just for the in-between wash days and is gentler on the hair.’
What is the best process to make curls look their best?
‘Apply your leave-in product to wet/damp hair to get the best results for your curls and leave it looking defined and popping. Curlies should only detangle their hair when it’s soaked in conditioner. It’s really important that your conditioner has good slip. Less painful for curlies!
How should you tackle product build-up?
‘I have days when my curls are not looking good and it can be when I’m using my most favourite product, so this is when I definitely need to give it a thorough cleanse with sulphate-free shampoo and a deep conditioner. Ensure you wash your shampoo out twice. The Mazuri Shea Butter Fresh Start Shampoo is great, as it’s made from natural ingredients (sulphate and paraben –free) and conditions and strengthens your hair.’
What are the different types of hair textures for curls?
‘Wavy, curly, kinky, coily! Those are the four different types of textures! Depending on the texture of our curl will depend on how often we wash it what products we use. I have about two different textures, so product use varies. Winter time I may use oils and summer time I use leave-ins.’
How do I get my curls to hold?
‘Ensure you section your hair and apply the product to wet hair and leave it to air-dry. It’s the best result I get to have definition and my curls to hold. Throughout the week I may use the Mazuri Shea Butter Naturals Leave-In Oil Moisturiser to refresh my curls. It’s made with all-natural oils and really helps to hydrate and recondition my hair while repairing damaged bonds. Another tip is to always sleep with a silk pillow and tie up hair loosely with a headwrap.’
What do you love most about the Mazuri Shea Butter Naturals range and what’s your favourite product from the range?
‘The products are very moisturising. The is a favourite of mine which I use in-between my 3-day wash day. It makes my hair feel silky and soft while gently removing salts that itch without stripping away natural oils. I also love the Leave-In Oil Moisturiser.’
