We catch up with Claston Gordon, winner of Battle of the Barbers, sponsored by Wahl and learn about his progress to winning the coveted title of winner of the Battle of Barbers.
I embarked on my career as a barber at age 19.
However, I was cutting my friends and brothers hair from 14
My motivation started with art/ designs in the hair.
I always had a love for the creative hairstyles , I think I have always been obsessed with creative aspects of barbering.
Creating something from nothing, barbers doing crazy things , leaving me asking ” where did your mind go?”.
Though I was self-taught , I was not content and really wanted to elevate my skills and training.
To enable me to be a professional and a barber who could tackle any hair type.
I enrolled at Chelsa & Westminster college to study NVQ LEVEL 2 in barbering.
I passed my course and soon I realised I would also need a NVQ LEVEL 3.
I was fortunate enough to successfully complete my training at London School of Barbering with distinctions in 2016.
Thank you very much and yes, I have done a few competitions.
My first competition was @afrohairandbeautylive 3 years ago.
Last year I got 3rd place so it was only natural for me to return this year, fully motivated, and focused.
My motivation is simple, I wanted to know if I could be the best.
I felt it was something I had to prove to myself, seeing legends like 5ive , Michael Damilo, @kutwildthebarber all previous champions.
I recently entered a photography competition; I thought why not.
I don’t know if I would do another as I didn’t feel any adrenaline however stage competition where my passion lies.
I currently have my own studio in Bromley, I converted a summer house in my garden.
I also do weekend in Kenley at Chris’s Barbershop.
Never give up, barbering is an art , enjoy the journey, always think of your clients’ needs and be honest, if you lack the skill get the necessary training!
