Black Beauty & Hair US correspondent Candace Morrow reports from the nation’s largest and best multicultural beauty show – Bronner Bros. in Atlanta, Georgia

Cotton candy-coloured coiffures and razor-edged haircuts dominated Bronner Bros. International Beauty Show held Feb. 11-13 in the United State’s Atlanta, Georgia.

“This year is all about cuts, colours, relaxers and lighteners — all in one,” said professional stylist David Bechet of High Maintenance Salon in Baton Rouge, Lousiana, which carries CHI hair care products. “We’re here with CHI Deep Brilliance, a line that allows highly textured clients to relax, colour and lighten in one process that protects hair, not damage it.”

The mid-winter show — dubbed the nation’s largest and best multicultural beauty show — featured more than 300 hair and beauty companies and more than 100 educational classes at downtown’s Georgia World Congress Center.

Hair enthusiasts, celebrities, stylists and educators from around the globe donned vibrant hues and haute hairdos. Participants experienced live beauty demos, world-famous barber battles and hands-on technique sessions during the three-day event, too.

Natural hair and loc lovers showed up and showed out as well with creative beaded and bantu-knotted looks. And the Queen of Natural’s and Jamaican Mango & Lime’s national platform artist, Mz Lady Lox, wowed with a crimson-tiered dreadlock updo that actually rotated. Yeah, really.

The extravagant hair event has stood the test of beauty show time since 1947. The original Bronner Brothers, Nathaniel Bronner Sr. and Arthur Bronner Sr., held their first Bronner Bros. Beauty Show at a local Atlanta Youth Men’s Christian Association.

It grew from 300 stylists to more than 30,000 barbers, stylists, estheticians, nail technicians and students. Today, Nathaniel Bronner Sr.’s youngest son, James Bronner, serves as the show director.

Attendees have never seen the same hairstyle twice throughout the decades. Atlanta masterstylist Colette B. Alexander guaranteed it from her demo booth.

“You can’t duplicate my cuts,” said the skilled educator, who placed second in the 2014 Bronner Bros. speed cutting competition. “It’s a roller set technique — one that brings out the feistiness in my clients.”

Since innovative cuts and psychedelic colours set the tone for 2017 at Bronner Bros. and will continue to emerge on runways, in entertainment and along streets, Alexander offers this advice to those wanting to live on the “cutting” edge:

“If you decide to colour or cut your hair, you’ve got to have confidence in the look,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what size your head is, don’t let the cut wear you.”
