Slipping my Southern silhouette into timeless designer gowns left me in utter awe of the bridal possibilities to underscore my lovely locs. I set up a fitting appointment at bridal and formal boutique Uptown Gowns since my moment to tie the knot nears. Luckily, I discovered a few sultry styles I’m now dream-day deliberating on. The following selections naturally complement carefree updos and “Gone with the Wind” loc styles throughout spring:
Style: Sheath gowns with a lace bateau neckline and plunging illusion back like my pictured ivory Mavis dress by Maggie Sottero. Why: This type of dress allows long locs to rest on the side of or in between the low back design in order to receive full cascading coverage.
Style: Trumpet gowns with a mandarin collar and an illusion back like my pictured ivory Everly dress by David Tutera. Why: This fit-and-flair dress is all about the intricate neck detail. It creates room for sleek to messy updos and hair accessories that don’t distract from the lacy gown and bejeweled satin sash.
Style: Strapless sweetheart gowns with pewter lace accents like my pictured white Ida dress by Sophia Tolli. Why: This hand-beaded dress works with pretty much any loc hairstyle, but because it offers so much shoulder room, gracing sexy slicked back or cute curly locs does the gown more dreadlock justice.
Style: Sheath gowns with a plunging sweetheart neckline and scalloped-edge open back like my pictured Julie dress by Rebecca Ingram. Why: This ivory dress harmonizes with side or middle-part, flowy locs since the gown’s front isn’t too busy and the back opens up for hair to drape effortlessly.
