Afro hairstylist Wendy Allick joins Peckham-based salon DKUK
Since Wendy Allick joined the team at DKUK, it is the first salon in Peckham to offer cuts, colours and styling services for every hair type – be it kinky, curly, wavy or straight – at a high-end level.
Bringing her expertise of braiding, weaving and precision cutting to this unique salon environment every Tuesday and Wednesday, it was Wendy’s initiative and perseverance that led to this new partnership.
Wendy said: “Originally I wanted to join a European hair salon as a stylist, as I was looking to learn new skills and try something different after more than twenty years cutting and styling afro hair. I realised though that this breadth of experience would also benefit these European salons and that I had something unique to offer. So I switched my idea round, looking to come into a salon offering my afro hair services, so we could learn from each other. This way it could benefit a European hair salon and vice versa. After asking many salons all over London, Daniel at DKUK was the first to yes, let’s go.”
The stylists and technicians are teaching each other new tips and tricks. “Since I’ve been at DKUK I’ve learned a lot” states Wendy. “Whilst the different techniques for cutting European or afro hair really aren’t that dissimilar, watching my colleagues here working has already given me some new ideas, for example adapting more natural finishing techniques when drying hair. I have already been able to start translating these ideas to working with afro hair”
