Just because we’re unable to get to the hairdressers, it doesn’t mean our hair has to stop looking its best. With many of us battling overgrown roots, there are products out there that will give a root cover up. Whether you want something temporary of more permanent, there’s a selection of products that will do the job with the minimum of fuss.
Give roots the boot with R&Co Bright Shadows Root Touch-Up Spray, £25. This breakthrough root touch-up instantly covers regrowth, greys or otherwise, between colour appointments. Available in seven shades ranging from Black to Red, the special formula means there’s no stickiness, dustiness, or transfer. It features a target actuator for mess- free application, providing coverage that lasts until the next shampoo.
Knight & Wilson Essential Root Touch-Up Kit (£6) offers home root maintenance made easy and is available in 25 permanent shades. The kit is made for roots at the front part of the hair and of course if there’s any dye left over you can use it to zap other greys. Working out at £2 per application, the price-friendly kit comes with a full size tube of colourant, three sachets of developer, a tinting brush and full instructions. The minimal letter-box friendly packaging that the kit comes in, ticks the box for both hassle-free delivery and less waste.
If you don’t want to be applying root concealing products daily, Clairol Nice’N Easy Root Touch Up (£5.99) is one of the bestsellers. The permanent hair dye It comes in 17 different shades, allowing you to maintain your shade between both home-hair colouring or your regular salon appointment. The targeted root crème formula expertly conceals root regrowth and greys in just 10 minutes, blending seamlessly with your existing shade thanks to a slightly reduced depth of colour and less development time.
Say goodbye to those pesky greys with Organic Colour Systems RootRemedy Retouch (£12.99) for a no-fuss approach to covering greys. Great for that emergency Zoom meeting, or when you need to look more presentable, there’s no reason to feel unprepared with this colour retouch product. Available in three shades Black, Dark Brown and Medium Brown, a few quick bursts of the natural, lightweight and vegan-friendly colour retouch will have you looking as though you have just stepped out of the salon.
New Toppik Coloured Hair Thickener (£18.95) is an innovative colour spray solution designed to disguise areas of thin or thinning hair, scalp show-through, patchy areas. The special formula dries quickly, resists wind and rain and perspiration and doesn’t rub off on bed sheets but is easily lifted by shampooing. The multi-tasking products can also do double duty as a root re-growth concealer between colour appointments.
If you don’t want greys to ruin your style, then Cover Your Gray has easy to use solutions to help with a quick fix. Cover Your Gray Root Touch Up (£3.85) and Cover Your Gray Root Touch Up & Highlighter (£3.85) are great for concealing sprouts of white and grey hair and only take seconds to apply. Easily washed out, you can keep these applicators in your handbag for touch ups on the go
It’s a pity that the Josh Wood Root Touch Up Blending Brush (£19), is a limited edition range as the soft brush applicator is the nicest we’ve handled and won’t ‘flick’ the colour about like those tint brushes tend to do. Darker Brown is the darkest shade offered online as they’ve now sold out of Black. The Blending Brush is able to cover larger areas of regrowth with a full coverage finish that lasts up to three shampoos. The temporary colour should be applied to wet or damp hair and blowdried to set colour in place.
When our BBH tester tried Alterna Stylist 2 Minute Touch Up (£9) she commented, ‘I’ve got a sprinkling of greys at the roots that make my hair look dusty, this covered them beautifully.’ The temporary root concealer is available in four shades Blonde, Light Brown, Dark Brown and Black. You still might be able to find the product on Amazon.co.uk
Wow Root Cover Up (£28.50) comes in a sleek compact and is water resistant to last in between shampoos. It’s like eye shadow for your hair; the two-sided brush is good for applying the powder to large and smaller areas and is perfect for applying colour onto natural afro textured hair as you have control and can build up colour. You can even swim in it.
Remember back in day when black women used to use mascara to cover up their frontal greys? Well Amirose have made a larger version of the mascara wand to cover a bigger area. The Amirose Hair Mascara (£9.95) is a semi-permanent solution for grey growth. Probably best on silkier and straighter hair textures as the mascara brush bristles can snag on natural texture afro hair.
